William Lee Rand has published a response to a March 2009 statement from the US Catholic Bishops on Reiki. Based on a few months’ research, the Bishops reached several conclusions about Reiki (see this document) and advised Catholic healthcare facilities and others not to support its use. In his response, William Lee Rand addresses the origin and nature of Reiki, the scientific basis for Reiki, acceptance in the medical community and ethical implications of the refusal of Reiki treatment to patients who request it:
“According to the AHNA statement in response to the bishops’ statement, the practice of holistic nursing is not subject to regulation by the Catholic church and it would be an ethical violation for a member of the AHNA to withhold Reiki treatment from a patient who requests it; this includes those working in Catholic hospitals.”
